Regents beat Verona 11-6, win sixth of last seven

24 May

-
No doubt the Verona Wildcats were confident coming into Tuesday night’s match up, having defeated West Madison in their last contest.

But the Regents have been on a tear, plowing through their last four Big 8 Conference opponents.

And Tuesday night’s game against Verona was no different.

Jake Fleischman goes 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs

Regent starter Jake Fleischman fired up the team by pitching a 1-2-3 first inning and then belting a double to bring in the Regents’ first run. Matt Ohm followed with an RBI single to right that put West up 2-0 at the end of one.

The first two outs of the second inning came on running catches by Will Marcus in left and Alex Brown in shallow center; the last was a strikeout swinging.

Kicking off the bottom of the second, Rock Cates, Kai Westring and Will drew walks to load the bases; Alex singled to left, knocking in two; and then Jake singled, scoring two more — while picking up his third RBI on the night.

Up 6-0 going into the top of the third, the Regents saw their lead cut to one, as the Wildcats rallied to score five runs before the inning was ended by a running grab and throw to first by Kai, and a John James snag at third to get the batter at first.

In the bottom of the third, the Regents tacked on another run when Kai hit a sacrifice fly to right.

Joe Trier picks up fourth win in eight days to go 5-1 on the season

With one out and one on in the top of the fourth, sophomore left-hander Joe Trier stepped to the mound and retired the next two batters on fly balls to left and center. The Regents then picked up another run in the bottom of the inning when Alex walked and stole second, Jake singled, and then Joe drove in the Regents’ eighth run on a sacrifice squeeze bunt.

Joe opened the top of the fifth by striking out Verona’s cleanup hitter. The next batter flew out to Alex in center, followed by a single and then a force to Rock at second.

In the bottom of the inning, Verona brought in their big closer, who retired the side — the Regents answered by retiring the side in the top of the sixth: Joe struck out their first batter on three pitches; Jake caught a high pop fly; and Rock scooped a a ball hit to second, throwing the runner out at first.

The Regents broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth when Alex singled; Joe reached on a fielder’s choice; Simon reached on an error, knocking in Alex; and a hard-hit ball by Nick Byers was thrown away by a Verona fielder, allowing two more runs to score.

Verona threatened in the bottom of the seventh when their lead-off batter took first on the only error committed by an otherwise flawless Regent defense.  The next two batters flew out to Alex in center before Verona scored a run on the only hit of the inning — and then committed their final out on a pop up to Jake at first.

This win caps off the final home game of the regular season and is the Regents’ fifth straight victory over Big 8 opponents.

Great job, guys!

Regents go down fighting in Waunakee

23 May

Barret Page led a seven-run 7th inning rally, going                  2 for 2 with 3 RBIs

During Monday night’s non-conference match-up against Waunakee, the Warriors’ starting pitcher shut down the Regent offense through six innings, allowing no runs and just four hits — while Waunakee’s bats provided a hefty eight-run cushion.

One might think this translated into an easy victory for Waunakee.

And one would be wrong.

In the top of the seventh, Barret Page led off with a single to left, and then Nate Haase smacked a single to right. Chris Sobek hit a sacrifice to score Barret, followed by a Rock Cates single to right that moved Nate to third.

And then the Regent batters grew patient, refusing to swing at anything but strikes.

Kai Westring drew a walk to load the basesand then Will Marcus walked, scoring Nate. Waunakee made a pitching change, and still the Regent batters stayed patient. Alex Brown walked, scoring Rock; Jake Fleischman walked, scoring Kai. Then Barret stepped up to the plate once again, this time hitting a bases-clearing double to left, knocking in three more runs.  John James then singled up the middle, before the Regents’ seven-run seventh inning would come to an end — stranding the tying and go-ahead runs.

Wow.

Yes, they lost. But the Regents came away from that game knowing that — whatever the score — they have it in them to come back.

They were indeed pumped and ready for their Tuesday night game against Big 8 conference rival Verona.

Red-hot Regents down DeForest, win fifth straight

21 May

-
Saturday afternoon was sunny and hot — a perfect day for a ballgame.

And boy did the Regents give us one.

Simon Rosenblum-Larson throws a gem vs DeForest on 5/19/2012

In the very first inning, Regents starter Simon Rosenblum-Larson sent the DeForest Norskies a strong message.

He struck out the side.

Simon went on to throw a complete-game pitching gem — allowing just one run on six hits and two walks, while striking out five batters on the day.

(Did I mention that Simon is a freshman?)

Behind Simon, the Regents once again played stellar defense. Some standout plays included: catcher Marco Mascitti‘s third-inning pick up of a dribbler in front of the plate that looked like trouble until he fired it to first to get the out; Alex Brown‘s stunning throw to home from center field, while Marco held on despite a collision with the runner; Kai Westring‘s line-drive snag in the fourth to end a DeForest threat; Barret Page‘s catch in right then throw to second for a double play in the fifth; John James‘ running pickup and laser to first in the seventh; and Rock Cates‘ game-ending grab of a hard-hit line drive to second.

Offensively, the Regents struck first when Alex belted a triple in the bottom of the first inning. But it wasn’t until the bottom of the the third that the Regents put a run on the board — starting with a DeForest fielder dropping a fly ball hit by Barret. Barret took second on a bad throw after Kai reached on an error, then Barret scored on a perfectly-executed sacrifice bunt by Will Marcus.

But the Norskies answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth — making it a tie ballgame.

A short-lived tie ballgame.

Coming to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, Alex smacked a lead-off double to left, followed by a Jake Fleischman single. While Jake attempted to steal second, Alex stole home — scoring the go-ahead run.

Inspired, the Regent offense broke out in the bottom of the fifth when Nick Byers walked, Barret singled to left, and Kai followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Then Will stepped up to the plate and crushed a double to left — scoring both Nick and Barret. Kai scored when Alex hit a ground-ball single to left, and then Jake knocked in Will before being thrown out at first.

When the dust finally settled, the Regents had a five-run lead — more than enough to pick up their fifth consecutive win.
