First Pitch Potluck Wed March 1, 2017


“First Pitch” is our “Season Opener” – An opportunity for the West Baseball Family (Freshman through Senior players, parents, and coaches) to:

  • enjoy a great meal
  • meet the players, parents, and coaches
  • get questions answered
  • learn about the organizations that sponsor our student athletes
  • learn about and commit to volunteer opportunities to support our players
  • take care of athletic department paperwork and fees (bring your checkbook)

Please bring the following to serve 8-10 people:

Freshmen – Main Course
Sophomores – Sides and Salads
Juniors – Sides and Salads
Seniors – Desserts

Beverages, plates and utensils will be provided.

Please RSVP once per household.

-2017 Tryouts-Monday March 20th-Wednesday March 22nd, from 8-10 PM

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will practice together. There will be no cuts at the Freshmen level. Freshmen will practice at a different time slot. Time and location will depend on the weather and field conditions.

Baseball Fee-$115

All this has to be taken care of before the March 20th (1st day of baseball practice). Cards can be picked up in the AD’s office.


Freshmen Team: At the Freshmen level, our focus is to teach players the skills and fundamentals necessary to be competitive. At this level, players will be introduced to the Madison West Baseball philosophies of hitting, pitching, throwing, fielding, base running, and other Madison West Baseball principles. Improvement, both as a team and individually, is an extremely important goal. Players will be prepared to compete at the next level at the completion of their season. Playing time will not be distributed equally, and is not guaranteed.
Junior Varsity Team: At the JV level, the players will build on skills and fundamentals that were developed at the Freshmen level. Players will learn how to play at a more competitive level. Players will be preparing to compete at the Varsity level, and will be introduced to higher end skills and drills. Playing time will not be distributed equally, and is not guaranteed. The JV team may consist of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
Varsity Team: At the Varsity level, players will be able to excel at the skills and fundamentals that they have learned at the previous two levels. They will also be introduced to more complicated skills and higher end concepts of baseball. Players will be expected to perform their roles to the best of their ability in order to help their team win. Playing time will not be distributed equally, and is not guaranteed. The varsity team may consist of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

-Season Schedule-

Freshmen often have a 17 game schedule

JV/Varsity have a 26 game schedule.

Varsity will have a scrimmage on March 25th at UW-Whitewater

-Practices: Freshmen tend to practice right after school from 3:45-5:45pm. The freshmen team practices on the West Baseball Field, across from West High School.

JV/Varsity-5:45pm-8 @ Mansfield across from Memorial High School

-Player Expectations

A. Be at all practices at least 10 minutes before practice begins.

B. Come prepared to practice outside-dress for the weather. Always have long sleeves and sweatpants in your baseball bag.

C. Dress like a baseball player-hat on straight, baseball cleats, etc.

D.If you can’t make a practice or game, it’s up to the player, not the parents, to contact their coach!

E Maintain a positive attitude about yourself and your team.

F. Represent your school and your team in a positive manner.

G.HAVE FUN!

–Spring Break is late this year, April 10th-14th- JV/Varsity has at least 3 games over spring break. The freshmen team has 2 games. Please plan accordingly.
