It was a sunny, but cold and windy evening at Mansfield Baseball “Stadium” on Thursday, as the host West Regents set to battle the visiting Memorial Spartans. This was a game with few highlights for the Regent squad.
Memorial started in the top of the first with a 5 spot. Their shortstop Sam Smith started with a bloop single, off Pitcher Gabe Hill, then promptly stole second and was advanced to 3rd on a sac bunt by RF Sam Sieloff. CF Jack Krumbach was hit by an errant curve ball and took first. He swiped second, and was knocked in by a single from Will Gustafson, Memorial’s DH. Will Sprout, the first baseman hit a double which was followed by a walk by their thirdbaseman Ryan Friendenreich. Catcher Owen Greene reached on an error that scored another run, and Sprout scored on a passed ball. The second baseman Isaac Blum fouled out to our first baseman, Donovan O’Flahrity and we had our second out. A wild pitch scored Friedenreich, then Memorial’s pitcher Billy Wilson popped out to first.
In the bottom of the first for the Regents, CF Austin Cotharn hit an infield single to a diving Isaac Blum. He was then caught stealing and followed by strikeouts by the SS Nate Millman, and the LF Tommy Hill.
The second inning for the Spartans featured a strikeout looking by Smith, a walk by Sieloff, a 4-3 groundout by Krumbach. Gustafson reached on an error, and Sprout followed with a backwards K. (that is a strikeout looking for you rookies out there.)
West’s half of the second was highlighted by a single from the DH Otto Treichel, but that was the extent of the excitement, as O’Flahrity struck out, the thirdbaseman Grunder walked, second baseman John Frehner flew out to (R), and RF Jens Shager flew out to CF.
The top of the third featured a double by Friedenreich, who advanced to third on a wild pitch. Greene followed with a strikeout. Blum knocked in Friedenreich with an RBI single, and was sacrificed to second by Billy Wilson for the second out. Charlie Met came in to relieve Gabe Hill on the mound, and the next batter was Smith who reached on yet another Regent error. He was quickly picked off first by Met for the third out.
The bottom of the third was solid by the Regents. Catcher Jacob Rosenberg reached on a wind aided error on a pop to first baseman Sprout. Cotharn followed with his signature single to the left center gap. Millman struck out, then Tommy Hill blasted a moon ball shot over the left center field fence for a 3-run ding-dong. O’Flahrity grounded out and Treichel flew out to center to end the frame. Spartans 6, Regents 3.
The Spartans scored 2 more in the top of the 4th, as Sieloff started with a single, Krumbach followed with another single and error to advance him to second as Sieloff scored. Gustafson grounded out, and Sprout hit into a fielders choice that did not result in an out, but did result in a run scored. 8-3 Spartans. Friendenreich was struck out by Met, Greene walked, and advanced on a wild pitch, but Blum grounded out 1-3.
The bottom of the 4th for the Regents was quiet, other than a walk by Frehner, and a single by Shager. Pinch hitter Owen Christenson popped up to Wilson on the mound, and Cotharn grounded out to end the inning.
The top of the Memorial 5th was not a good inning for the Regents. The Spartans scored 5 more, with at least 2 more errors by us. David Grunder toed the mound for the Regents in this inning, striking out 2 batters and walking 3.
The bottom of the fifth started and ended with the Regents down 10 runs.
Look. Some games are great, and some games are not. That is baseball. We have to play hard and not play afraid to make mistakes. Play with confidence. Its only a mistake if you don’t learn from it. Let’s move on.
Game time is 5 PM tomorrow night in Beloit.
