The Throw.

It was a warm windy day at Mansfield Stadium as the West Regents faced off against the LaFollette Lancers.  Gabe Hill was the starting pitcher, and held the Lancers in check for 6 innings before giving way to Austin Cotharn in the 7th.

The Regents Line was 4 Runs on 4 hits with one error, while the Lancers had 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 errors.

Here is how it went down.  LaFollette started with no runs in the first, a single by the 3rd hitter Rajkovich, and two strikeouts by Gabe Hill.  West followed with a 1, 2, 3 bottom of the first as 2b/CF Cotharn and LF Tommy Hill struckout and catcher Drake Baldwin grounded back to the pitcher.  0-0

The top of the second featured Patton, the Lancers centerfielder reaching on an error, but being promptly retired as he tried to steal second.  The right fielder Nix flew to CF, and the first baseman Delvoye struck out.

The bottom of the second featured a walk by DH Otto Treichel, a strikeout on a knee bending curveball for our firstbaseman Donovan O’Flahrity, and a single by 3B Charlie Met. RF Jens Shager followed with a walk, but the Regents were unable to plate a run.

In the top half of the 3rd, the Lancers were able to score 2 on 2 doubles, a walk, and a single.

West responded in the bottom of the 3rd with 2 runs of their own.  Cotharn walked and went to second on a passed ball.  Frehner (who came in to spell Tommy Hill who left with a hand injury) tried to sacrifice Cotharn to 3rd with a great bunt that was thrown away allowing Austin to score and Frehner to reach safely.  Baldwin struckout and Treichel drove in Frehner. 2-2 tie at the end of 3.

In the fourth, LaFollette’s right fielder Nix singled.  He then stole second as Delvoye swung wildly and flailed in front of Baldwin as he tried to throw out the stealing Nix. The fans and coaches immediately suggested gently that the umpire had missed an interference by the batter.  The umpire saw it differently, or not at all and the runner remained safe.  Then Delvoye, the first baseman for the Lancers ripped a single.  Runners now on first and third.  As Simon, their left fielder batted, the Delvoye started for second base to steal the bag.  Baldwin paused, threw a strike to SS Nate Millman who threw back to Baldwin as Nix broke for home.  Rundown time.  After a 2-6-2-5-2-6, the runner Nix was tagged out.  Delvoye was trying to sneak to 3rd when he was discovered by detective Nate Millmann,  who promptly tagged him out for a double play.  Gabe Hill then finished the inning by striking out Simon.

In the Regents half of the fourth, Shager singled to right center, and as CF Colin Pulkrabek tried to sacrifice him to second on another beautiful bunt, the throw was high and all were safe.  Pinch Hitter Owen Christenson was up next.  Shager scored on a PB during his at bat, as Pulkrabek moved up to 3rd.  A Sacrifice Fly to right by Owen scored Colin.  Cotharn followed with a single to left center, then stole second.  Frehner popped to third, Baldwin walked, and Treichel scorched a liner to left that was caught by their diving left fielder.  4-2 Regents.

The 5th inning was uneventful for both teams.

The 6th was the same.

The Lancers last licks were lively.  Delvoye started with a single off of Gabe Hill who exited afterward.  Gabe finished with 8 strikeouts, and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, walking only one.  Austin Cotharn came in to finish things up with a runner on first.   He struck out the first batter Simon, followed by walks to Rajkovich, Trebian, and Endicott to load the bases with one out for the other Rajkovich (there are two).  The crowd was getting restless and came to their feet.  Rajkovich lofted a fly to mid center field as Pulkrabek set him self up well to catch and deliver a do-or-die bullet to the plate.

Do.

Baldwin snatched the throw and tagged out the earlier Rajkovich to end the ball game.  Regents 4, Lancers 3.  Game Over.  That was an exciting end.
