On a sunny and bright Wednesday evening, May 3rd, 2017, the Madison West Regents battled the Monona Grove Silver Eagles. Digging in on the mound was none other than The Tenacious Tower, Gabe Hill. He did not disappoint.
The 5-6 Silver Eagles went toe-to-toe with the 8-4 Regents for the first five frames. But when the smoke cleared the Regents reigned supreme by a final of 7-2.
Here is how it went down:
I can summarize Gabe’s performance in one word: Dominant. He allowed one hit through 5 and 1/3 innings, and 4 in a complete game 7 inning performance.
He had 1-2-3 innings until the 6th, aided by a 1-6-3 double play. (pitcher to shortstop to first for those scoring newbies).
He struck out 5, and walked….wait for it….only one batter.
We played much better tonight in the field, with errorless defense. We looked much more awake and alert tonight.
Monona Grove’s starting pitcher TJ Dunn held us in check fairly well for the first 3 innings. We had 3 ground outs to second in the first, a single by DH Otto Treichel and CF Eli Sorensen, in the second but we were doubled up to end the inning without getting one across. In the fourth, Donovan O’Flahrity our left fielder reached on either an error or a bad-hop single, stole second, and was advanced to third on a groundout by Owen Christensen the first baseman. He got stranded at third when Eli flew out to right.
Our fifth inning is when the fun started. John Frehner singled, and advanced to second when Tommy Hill, fresh off a 2.5 week stint on the DL, came in to pinch hit for Colin Pulkrabek in RF. Tommy hit a hard grounder to second baseman Brady Gerothanas that could not be corralled, allowing all to be safe on the error. He and Frehner advanced on SS Austin Cotharn’s walk, and Charlie Met then hit into a fielder’s choice that cut down Frehner at the dish. Catcher Drake Baldwin flew to deeeeeeep right for a sacrifice fly that scored Hill easily from third. Otto grounded out to end our threat. Regents 1, Silver Eagles 0.
Their 6th inning was their finest performance of the evening, starting with a walk by Graham Arndt, the shortstop for MG. Gerothanas flew out to Tommy Hill in RF, and Hunter Moroni had a single. MG’s leadoff hitter Jackson Thomsen was struck out by Gabe Hill, and Colton Koch followed with a deep shot to right center just over the reach of a hustling Tommy Hill. Two runs scored. Their next hitter was Mitch Kelsey their first baseman who hit into a fielder’s choice when Koch ran from second into a tag by our thirdbaseman Charlie Met. 2-1 Silver Eagles.
That was all the fun they would have. In the bottom of the 6th, O’Flahrity lead off with an infield single, and was followed by Owen Christenson who was hit by a pitch. Eli Sorensen then attempted a sac bunt to advance both runners, and he successfully did this. However, the pitcher fielded the ball and over threw Kelsey at first to allow O’Flahrity to score. 2-2 tie. Jens Shager then pitch hit for Frehner and grounded out 6-3. Tommy Hill came to the plate with two runners on, and drilled a shot to the right center field gap, legging out a stand-up triple. 4-2 Regents! Cotharn walked, stole second and was followed by pinch hitter Donavan Parker who also walked. Bases loaded for Drake and he walked to force in Tommy. 5-2 Regents. Otto singled in Austin, and Charlie Met who came in on re-entry after Parker’s walk, scored on a throwing error for our 7th run. 7-2 Regents as the inning came to an end with a fly out to center.
In the top of the 7th, a single by the DH Marshall Lehman was all the Silver Eagles could muster off Gabe Hill, who finished as strong as he started. What a great performance he had this night.
Next game is tomorrow night in the rematch of the Regents vs Madison Memorial Spartans. This is at 5 PM at Mansfield Stadium. You know the drill. Show up, wear Blue and/or Maize, cheer loudly and often. We are the away team on Thursday, so no pre-game prep is needed. Sit back, and enjoy!
